On this day, the Church celebrates the feast of the Conversion of Saint Paul. Probably the most famous conversion story in the history of Christianity, Saint Paul’s story is well documented in the bible. Saint Paul’s conversion should be a great source of hope and comfort for all Christians. It reminds us that we are never beyond the all-encompassing forgiveness of our Lord. No matter how bad we believe our sins to be, Christ’s love for us is stronger. After all, Saint Paul actively persecuted Christians and Christ called him to be his greatest evangelist. Our faults become a way for us to grow deeper in faith. They exist, in a way, in order to remind us that we can’t rely on ourselves for everything. We need Him to help us overcome our faults and failings. For most of us, the really hard part is not asking Christ to forgive us our sins, but forgiving ourselves for not living up to expectations. Just keep in mind Saint Paul’s conversion. If Saint Paul wasn’t beyond the Lord’s mercy, neither are we. Have hope.
O God, who taught the whole world through the preaching of the blessed Apostle Paul, draw us, we pray, nearer to you through the example of him whose conversion we celebrate today, and so make us witnesses to your truth in the world. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
This is the concluding prayer from today’s Liturgy of the Hours. I found it to be quite beautiful and inspiring so I thought I’d share it.
